A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
