Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.
